I’ve got guests coming for dinner (x3), I’ve got dinner to prep, I’ve got laundry to fold, and after hearing that lovely noise, I now need to change the sheets on my bed, Thank you Lacey!
All of these things must be put on hold. Today is a big day at our house. It’s day 10 you see! Day 10? You haven’t a clue what I’m talking about?
Well, let me tell you. After going to the dentist in September, the dentist encouraged Kevin to stop sucking his thumb when he turned 4. Not 4.5, but to be done completely by his 4th birthday. Kevin has said many times, “When I turn 4 Mom, I wont suck my thumb any more!” In preparation for this grand occasion Kevin worked really hard to not suck his thumb in the car. Once we kicked that we worked on only sucking his thumb when he was in his bed. Then 15 days ago I suggested tape on his thumb and although he cried while I wrapped it on there he willingly held his thumb up. His first nap was a bit of a struggle, lots of tears and sadness, he said over and over, “I can’t do it Mom, because it’s too hard!” I told him about when I was little and sucked my thumb. I can remember having a band aide on it at night to remind me not to suck it. I can remember wanting so badly to take it off. I can remember sucking on it anyway and being grossed out. After hearing that he decided to keep trying. Cody and I told him that as soon as he went 10 days in a row without sucking his thumb he could go pick out a brand new toy. On day 5 he was pretty bitter at me and sucked his thumb trying to prove a point. So we started the 10 days over. He has blown right through these 10 days. We haven’t taped his thumb in 5 days and I haven’t reminded him in that many days or more.
I’m sure you can imagine the excitement this morning. We were all dressed and in the car by 8 AM so that Kevin could go pick out his new toy. We went up and down the isles 3 or 4 times looking for JUST the perfect new toy!
He would pick out a toy and then say, “Is this what I want Mom?” But, (as hard as it is for me!) I gave NO direction today. I let him pick WHATEVER he wanted because he did something VERY HARD!
Kevin boy, I’m so proud of you! You can do hard things. This is just the tip of the iceberg, you will be faced with many more hard things and you can do it. I know you can!
I love you!!!!
Love, Mom
